What is the Birmingham Learning Alliance doing?

In Birmingham, five aspects of the water environment will be tackled over the next five years and are concerned with:

  • Three are concerned with resolving groundwater issues and safe groundwater/aquifer reuse
  • Storm water management and the additional resources and ecological benefits of extensive green roofs
  • Quantifying the potential impacts (on energy, waste, water, organisation and costs) of alternative options for integrated urban water management (IUWM)

The SWITCH approach underpins the delivery of these specific objectives, which are all stakeholder driven.  The policy issues are also high on the Learning Alliance agenda.  SWITCH training and SWITCH knowledge transfer from other demonstration cities will be critically developed to assist the evolution of IUWM practice in Birmingham.

By concentrating on a limited range of objectives in the next four years, SWITCH has an opportunity to strongly develop a learning alliance culture which can be enhanced within the existing organisational framework.  The principal aim is to expose, to the widest audience in possible, the breadth of actions in IUWM required for a sustainable future and the strength of a community based approach to delivery of agendas for knowledge acquisition through research and training.  Furthermore, knowledge application for scaling up innovations in this region.

Regional Climate Change Task Group-This is a newly formed organisation, under the direction of the West Midlands Regional Assembly, which is looking into and taking action on the likely impacts of climate change on the region. The Birmingham LA is seeking to exchange delegates to sit in on each others meetings and to exchange ideas and information.

UKWIR research programme provides national association for water industries as a member of the Birmingham LA.

Eastside demonstrator-By creating a formalised link with this group under the Birmingham Green Roofs Project, the connection for the demonstration project will be complete.
