City Water Introduction

City Water is a new combined knowledge management and decision support system that has been designed to scope the impacts of future integrated urban water management (IUWM) strategies . It can be used to explore a wide range of IUWM options and to work with relatively simple to assemble data sets. It is designed to be usable without a high level of knowledge of the engineering concepts and physical/chemical processes that are represented in the various scoping tools. As such it is not a design tool. It can be used to allow a common understanding within a Learning Alliance of the consequences of different possible actions.
We would like to introduce this tool to you in a meeting to be held at the University of Birmingham, Geography Building Room 125 on 23rd February 2009 from 2pm. The aim of the meeting is to introduce the tool, discuss the application of it and for Learning Alliance members to comment on it.

Stormwater Online 2-The University of Abertay Dundee

The second run of the online course on Stormwater, administered by the University of Abertay Dundee is due to start in February 2009.  This will be the last time this course will run with zero cost for Learning Alliance members.  Enrolement details are available from http://www.switchtraining.eu/index.php?id=5438&cmd=view&view_id=68. The course covers a number of issues relating to stormwater management and sustainable drainage, with an international slant. It examines best practice globally (including work ongoing in the UK) and the issues related to sustainable drainage methods. There is some background on legislatory issues, but the focus is on design and maintenance issues.

The course does require a time commitment in the region of 5 hours per week, and a number of exercises are completed over the duration, which you will be given feedback on from experts in those specific areas. In addition to the online materials, there is an accompanying CD with photos, papers and interactive diagrams to explain, for example, runoff processes.   A member of the LA completed this course in 2008 and found it worthwhile and interesting. You are able to progress at your own pace and tutors are available to answer questions via email or the online discussion forum.

Places on the course are extremely limited, so please only sign up to it if you intend to complete all of the tasks and assignments.
